What it is
Madecassoside is one of the four main centella actives, a glycoside of madecassic acid with a sugar attached. As a purified single compound rather than an extract, its dose is clear, and in Korea it became widely known through madeca cream products.
Over 250 Korean products use it, often listed with centella extract and asiaticoside. It is a core ingredient in products for post-procedure care, redness relief and barrier recovery.
Role in cosmetics
Calming and reducing redness
Studies show it dampens inflammatory signals, so it is used in products that settle irritated skin. Among the cica compounds it has the most research in this direction.
Barrier recovery
Research on collagen synthesis and faster wound healing supports its use in post-peel and post-laser care and barrier creams.
Evidence and scope
Cell and animal studies repeatedly confirm anti-inflammatory activity and collagen synthesis, and human studies report madecassoside creams improving redness and recovery after UV damage. Most were run with multi-ingredient products, so the compound's individual contribution is hard to isolate.
Concentration and formulation
0.05 to 0.5 percent is typical; above 1 percent is rare. As a purified compound, small amounts are meaningful, and some products state the content in ppm. Water-soluble, it fits toners and ampoules easily.
Cautions
Irritation and allergy are rare, so it appears in post-procedure care. As a plant-derived compound, occasional reactions are possible, so start new products with a small amount.

Frequently asked questions
Are madecassoside and madecassic acid the same?+−
Madecassoside is madecassic acid with a sugar attached. The sugar comes off in skin to give madecassic acid, and the two are often formulated together.
How much madecassoside is in a madeca cream?+−
It varies and most brands do not disclose it. Ingredient order or a ppm figure on the label can give a hint.
Does it help red acne marks?+−
Research supports calming redness and aiding recovery, which is why cica products are recommended, but there is no evidence it erases marks.
